The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial team is often appearing at events and other happenings about town.
ROYAL OAK (June 15, 2018). The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial was pleased to be joined by music historian Stu Johnson as he traveled back in time to the music of WWII. We heared the sounds of jazz greats and the songs that touched the G.I.’s hearts, connecting with their feelings of hope, longing, loneliness and love. Music played a vital role in victory.
Stu Johnson is a past member of the Michigan Jazz Record Collectors. Ten years ago he began to give presentations throughout the metro area, giving over 100 talks, sharing his knowledge and love of historical music.
During the war, most of our troops had access to the radio. Along with the Armed Forces Radio Service, the U.S.O., the Hollywood Canteen, “buddy kit” phonographs and “V” records, the home front did what it could to lift the spirits of U.S. servicemen and women at home and abroad.

LANSING (May 23, 2018) President Debi Hollis and Vice President Russell Levine brought Rosie the Riveter to the Michigan Senate chamber with Senator Steve Bieda and Senator Marty Knollenberg after testifying before the House Finance Committee. Senate Bills 816 and 817 sponsored by Senator Bieda and Knollenberg would allow Michigan tax payers receiving refunds to designate a portion for The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. The bill passed out of committee and subsequently was approved by the entire House and Senate. It now awaits Governor Snyder’s signature.
AUBURN HILLS (May 21, 2018) President Debi Hollis was the keynote speaker at the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Headquarters and Technology Center as part of their Memorial Day ceremonies.
WARREN (April 12, 2018) President Debi Hollis and Vice President Russell Levine (pictured) presented the story of the memorial to members of the UAW Region 412 Retirees Chapter. Board members Judy Maten and Michael Cameron were also in attendance.
ROYAL OAK (March, 2018) Representatives of The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial mingled with guests at ROAK Brewery every Tuesday. A portion of the proceeds from any featured pizza of the month or Devil Dog Oatmeal Stout (and you didn’t need to be a Marine to order) supported The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial.
LANSING (February 28, 2018) Board President Debi Hollis and project architect Michael Gordon testified before the Senate Finance Committee. They supported the bills that Senators Steve Bieda and Marty Knollenberg are sponsoring to add The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial as a charity for Michigan taxpayers can designate as recipients of refunds. The bill was unanimously voted out of committee and later passed by the full Senate. It now moves on to the house.
DETROIT (February 3, 2018) Friends of The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial checked out the new Little Caesars Arena, shot a free throw and watched the Detroit Pistons take on the Miami Heat. 25 attendees joined the “high five” tunnel as Miami Heat players came to the floor.
ROYAL OAK (December 11, 2017) Sgt. Robinson presents Board member Kim Jones with a check at the Royal Oak City Commission meeting . The check represents monies collected from the Army sponsored Ruck Run held on Saturday, November 11 In downtown Royal Oak. Thanks to all who participated in the event! All proceeds will go to The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial.
WARREN (December 9, 2017) President Debi Hollis and Vice President Russell Levine presented the story of the memorial to members of the UAW Region 1 Veterans Council. Council chairman Carlton Pace was on hand to give us a warm welcome.

ROYAL OAK (November 11, 2017) Board member Kim Jones and Brick Program Manager Bernie Quinlan hosted an informational table at the Veterans Day Ruck Run in Royal Oak. The purpose of this event was to bring awareness to veteran suicide prevention and to benefit The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial.
ROCHESTER (September 22, 2017) Board members Kim Jones and Donnaleen Lanktree joined President Debi Hollis and Vice President Russell Levine as they presented the story of the memorial at the Older Persons Commission.
ROYAL OAK (September 18, 2017) President Debi Hollis and Vice President Russell Levine presented the story of the memorial to residents of the Village of Royal Oak Senior Living Center.
DETROIT (August 13, 2017) Fans of the Detroit Tigers and The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial celebrated the 72nd anniversary of VJ Day and the end of WWII on The Spirit of ’45 day at Comerica Park. LIVONIA (December 10, 2016) V-Squad members Bernie Quinlan, Temple Cumiskey, board member Mike Cameron and President Debi Hollis cheered on the faithful with the West Point Society of Michigan while watching the annual Army-Navy football game at their tailgate event.
DETROIT (November 12, 2016) Vice President Russell Levine attended the 2016 Tuskegee Airman National Museum Salute Reception where he witnessed Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson receive the French Legion of Honor that Russell had nominated him for. Lt. Col. Jefferson is a consultant with The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial, helping ensure historical accuracy of the “Air” statue scene.

LIVONIA (May 18, 2016) Vice President Russell Levine had the honor of pinning a Purple Heart and Bronze Start Medal on Private Henry Malec at the monthly Michigan chapter of the 101st Airborne Division Association ”Lunch Bunch” meeting. Russell worked with Senator Debbie Stabenow’s office to obtain replacements for Henry’s medals which had been stolen. Barbara McCallahan Director of Community Affairs for Senator Stabenow formally presented the meal. Board member Nate Strong was also in attendance.

DETROIT (May 1, 2016) Vice President Russell Levine was on hand at Detroit branch of the NAACP Fight for Freedom Fund dinner when our Tuskegee Airman consultant, Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson was presented with a Bronze Star Medal. Russell had discovered the fact that unbeknownst to Alex, he was awarded this medal. Then he worked with Senator Stabenow’s office to procure it, organize the presentation and draft her remarks.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP (September 6 – 7, 2014) – Board members Pam Robbins, Rick Sage, Chris Zimmel and Cathy Zimmerman met the public along with WWII home front reenactors and current day war front personnel at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base Open House and Air Show.

DETROIT (August 17, 2014) – Project Sculptor Larry Halbert and President Debi Hollis spent the day at the Sunday Street Market at Eastern Market that was held on Sundays July 6 though September 7 from 10-4 at Eastern Market. They met a lot of great people and even collected some “cabbage” of the spending variety to further our cause.

LIVONIA (August 2, 2014) – Project Sculptors Larry Halbert and Tad McKillop unveiled the life-sized clay model of “Joe” from “Mail Call” our Land statue scene at the 2014 Highland Games. The St. Andrews Society of Detroit hosted the event. Michael Gordon, St. Andrews Society President and the architect of the memorial joined WWII Veteran Art Fishman at the display.
GRAND RAPIDS (August 2, 2014) – President Debi Hollis attended the MLive “Michigan Honors” open house hosted by the Grand Rapids Press. Over 250 WWII veterans were photographed and had their names and stories chronicled. This was a great way for us to meet veterans from the area and tell them about the memorial. ROYAL OAK (July 12, 2014) – The 44th Annual Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair allowed board members Rick Sage and Mary Ellen Soma along with Project Sculptor Larry Halbert the opportunity to set up a display at ground zero of the future home of The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. We can’t wait for the memorial itself to be the dramatic backdrop of this annual event.
ROYAL OAK (June 14-15, 2014) – Our bronze casted Mail Call soldier spent the week-end at the Royal Oak Clay and Glass Festival in a tent with Project Sculptor Larry Halbert and members of our board.
TROY (June 10, 2014) – Diners at Granite City Food & Brewery had 20% of their total bill donated to The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. Thanks to all who supported us during mess time.
ROYAL OAK (June 6, 2014) – On the 70th anniversary of D-Day, June 6 2014, we hosted an exclusive playing of Saving Private Ryan at the Emagine Theater Royal Oak. Tickets were $19.44 with proceeds benefiting The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial (ticket price includes movie admission). Thanks to all who attended.
ROYAL OAK (May 31, 2014) -The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial hosted a water table at the Oak Apple Run for the fourth consecutive year. This was a great way to let people know about the project and help another good cause at the same time,
BIRMINGHAM (May 18, 2014) – Members of our board fell in line to march in the Birmingham Hometown Parade.
ROYAL OAK (April 23, 2014) – President Debi Hollis, Vice President Nate Strong and board member Al Muskovitz hosted a table at the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce Mixer. Several chambers were represented at this event where we introduced our Business Allies Campaign.
STERLING HEIGHTS (March 18-19, 2014) – The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial hosted an informational table at the 56th annual Michigan In Perspective local history conference.
DETROIT (November 10, 2013) – Members of the board celebrated Veteran’s Day by marching in the 8th annual Detroit Veteran’s Day parade.
